Your First Swim

by Donna McIlwain

What is it like to visit a Northcoast Naturists swim? If it is your first nudist experience, you may feel a little strange at first. When everyone else is nude it becomes a lot easier. Give yourself 15 minutes and you should start feeling right at home.

Bring a towel to sit on and a bigger one to dry off after being in the water. You will need ID and perhaps a pair of athletic shoes if you plan to play wolleyball or use the aerobic equipment.

In order to encourage you to try this, your first visit to NN is free. As you come in the door, you will see our swim coordinator, Jerry S and his assistant Edward P. They will welcome you, ask for photo ID and get you signed up as a visitor. If you are interested we will take your address and have a monthly newsletter mailed to you for a while. This will help acquaint you with the many activities that take place both summer and winter. The club has many nude activities besides the swims.

You will be introduced to a friendly member, many times it is Linda L, who will take you on a tour of the facility and show you where everything is. She (or he) may introduce you to some of the members to help you meet people and feel welcome to the club.

Directly opposite the sign-in table will be our merchandise area. Items are for sale during the first hour of the swim. We have NN towels, t-shirts, hats and pareos. There are the guides to nude recreation, some window decals, and even body stickers that look like tattoos until they wash off.

One area for social gathering is around the food table. Most people bring snacks and special treats and the club supplies soft drinks, ice, and bottled water. On your first swim you are not expected to bring any food, but you are welcome to enjoy the food table and drinks. Please note that alcoholic beverages are not allowed at the swim.

Activities at the swim range from physical (swim, wallyball, and exercise machines) to low key (hot tub, eating, talking, etc.). There is sometimes a discussion, demonstration or presentation that usually takes place upstairs in the meeting room. You are always welcome to attend. The swims are a place where members may share something they enjoy or feel confident in presenting…we would probably love to have you do a demo or talk about a hobby or teach us something you know very well. Occasionally we will play games at a swim (like Euchre or Farkle or some other special game) but we frequently have a special outing to someone’s home to do this kind of thing.

The swim officially starts at 7:30 PM and is over at 10:30 PM. If you are there early, we love to have help with setting up. If you are a late person, you can volunteer to help with clean up. We are a non-profit group, and we’re all volunteers. Helping and working together gives us a sense of community and ownership…come join us!

Hope to see you soon at a swim!
